ABOUT MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE SNOW BOWL

The Middlebury College Snow bowl is nestled in Middlebury Gap, halfway between Routes 7 and 100. “The Bowl” sports 14 trails, 3 chairlifts, and a respectable 1,050 foot vertical drop. As one of the last and oldest College owned ski areas, Middlebury has some interesting terrain for all abilities featuring many classic, narrow, steep, windy New England runs. The Bowl is divided into two main areas—the front side, with two double chairs serving advanced and beginner terrain and the East Slope, or the Bailey Falls area composed of longer advanced runs served by a modern triple chair. The front side has the most pitch and features the two racing trails, Ross and the infamous double fall-lined Allen. Middlebury racers can be seen fine tuning their skills on these runs, both of which played host to the NCAA Division I National Championships in 2001. The Baileys Falls Area is isolated and beautiful featuring some narrower runs such as Youngman and LaForce. The lodge was renovated for the 2004-5 season. The ski area usually has good natural snow cover and 35% of the 110 acres has snowmaking. Trails are usually groomed on one side allowing skiers to try bumps on the other side. With a clientele of local families and college students, Middlebury is a good side-trip for those who visit the Mad River Valley or Killington and wish to escape the masses. — Contributed by thetrailboss, Middlebury Class of 2003.
