ABOUT BIG SQUAW MOUNTAIN

Big Squaw Mountain is located in the Moosehead Lake region town of Greenville, Maine. Although it is often forgotten because of its remote location, the locals and regulars at Big Squaw have no complaints about the uncrowded trails and lifts. Big Squaw has a diverse variety of terrain and the mountain is split into 2 major areas: the Upper and lower mountains (or double and triple chair areas).

The triple chair (lower mountain) services mostly beginner and intermediate terrain. Beginners will enjoy a long gentle run down Fitzgerald or Squaw Brook whereas intermediates will enjoy Kennebec and Allagash and a variety of other trails on the lower mountain area. The upper mountain (double chair area) is where advanced to expert skiers will have fun on trails like St. Croix, a classic New England style run that is only 1 snow cat wide most of the way down. Intermediate to expert skiers will enjoy the East Branch and Penobscot trails. The East Branch stretches for 2.5 miles and the Penobscot trail has some of the best views in New England. In fact, the great trail designer Sel Hanna once said, ‘Of all the 1,000 ski trails and 300 ski areas I have designed the Penobscot Trail at Big Squaw Mountain is by far the most scenic.’

Big Squaw also has 70% snowmaking, but the upper mountain is usually left untouched until Mother Nature decides to blanket it. The season at Big Squaw lasts from late-November to early-April. The resort has a 52 unit hotel and two base lodges.
