ABOUT LOON MOUNTAIN

Loon Mountain dates its beginnings back to 1964 when former New Hampshire Governor and highly noted outdoorsman Sherman Adams eyed the mountain’s northern face as a potential ski area location. Adams consulted with none other than skiing legend Sel Hannah on the possibilities of Loon Mountain as a ski area. By 1966, the mountain was open and serviced by a PHB/Hall Gondola which has since been replaced in 1988 by a four person Doppelmayr with original towers in tact. Loon Mountain was bought by Booth Creek Resorts in 1998 bringing us up to date.

Featuring a 2,100 foot vertical drop, three high speed lifts including one of New Hampshire’s two gondolas, lots of slope side lodging, and terrain to suit all abilities, Loon is established as one of premier ski resorts of New Hampshire. Location is key for Loon, with easy access right off Interstate 93, a northerly exposure with excellent views of the Franconia Ridge, and the Lincoln strip which offers plenty of condos, hotels, restaurants, shops, and après ski possibilities.

On the mountain, experts will waste no time in accessing the East Basin Double Chair for steep no non-sense thrills while those of the intermediate persuasion have the Kancamagus Quad and it’s many groomed Blue Squares to play on. Two beginner areas offer less steep learning areas as true beginners will not find much skiing from the summit.

Loon’s easy access, quick drive from Boston, and cheap season pass create high skier visits and traffic. Be prepared for long lift lines, quickly deteriorating snow conditions, and crowded slopes on any fair weather weekend at Loon. However, catch Loon during the week or late in the season and the mountain is yours.
